Evergreen Meme began with the Ever Given, the container ship that became lodged in the Suez Canal in 2021 and briefly disrupted global supply chains. The incident quickly became meme material.
I started the painting shortly afterward, but spent years painting and repainting tiny containers. I repeatedly set it aside, returned to it, and reworked sections before finally finishing it in 2023.
Eventually the process became part of the joke. A painting about a ship that got stuck had itself become stuck.
